Small dogs/cats travel in an approved carrier; cabin pet limits apply per cabin class. Delta has paused general public pet cargo/checked transport, limited now to active-duty military and Foreign Service members.
Rules for flying Delta Air Lines with a dog
- carrier must be leak-proof with ventilation on 3 sides (domestic) or 4 sides (international)
- not permitted in Business/Delta One cabin
- brachycephalic breeds barred from cargo (which is paused anyway)

Service animals and emotional support animals
Trained service dogs fly free under DOT/ADA rules, separate from the pet program.
Since the DOT's January 2021 final rule, Delta treats emotional support animals as ordinary pets subject to the standard pet fee and carrier rules.
Good to know: Pets cannot travel to/from a list of destinations including Australia, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Iceland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and UAE, among others.
